CHAPTER 16

Jax and I stared at each other.

“This is awkward,” Celia said. “I’ll leave you two alone to… do whatever it is you’re going to do.” The ghost followed Lennon, whistling to herself as if she didn’t have a care in the world.

Jax reached for me, but I stepped back as he said, “Marion, I—”

I held up a hand. “Save it. I don’t think I want to know.”

“I didn’t sleep with Bethany,” he said, his tone full of frustration. “I have no idea what that was back there, but none of it was true. I have never asked her out. We’ve only ever had drinks as friends on my porch. That’s it. I wasn’t lying when I said she reminds me too much of my ex-wife. I’m not interested in her.”

“Then why does she think so?” I asked, not ready to just let it all go. The fact was Jax didn’t owe me any explanations. His relationship with Bethany was his business. I’d turned him down and bailed on every invitation he’d extended since I’d moved to town. I had zero reason to be upset or jealous if he’d been seeing someone else.

I knew that. The problem was I couldn’t shake the feeling that I’d been betrayed somehow. It wasn’t fair, and I was doing my best to bury that feeling, but I wasn’t being very successful.

It was also true that he’d gone out on the date with Lennon as a favor to me. He hadn’t wanted to be fixed up. The poor guy was a victim in this crazy drama.

But none of that changed the fact that Bethany felt betrayed by him, and I really wanted to know why.

“I really don’t know.” He blew out a breath while holding the back of his neck with one hand. “Honestly, I need to go talk to her, but after that public display, I really don’t want to do it alone.”

I frowned, pinching my eyebrows together as I jerked back a touch. “You’re saying you need an escort?”

“Yes,” he said seriously. “I’m worried she’s having some sort of mental breakdown. She implied we’ve had sex, and we haven’t. I haven’t had sex since…” He muttered a curse under his breath and I found myself intensely curious about that answer.

“Since when, Jax?” I asked gently. It was a personal question that I had no business asking, but he’d brought it up. How was I supposed to just let that go?

He shoved his hands into his jean’s pockets. “Not since before I got divorced.”

“Oh.” That was a surprise. He’d been divorced for at least five years, hadn’t he? And likely separated for longer than that. “That’s…”

“Unfortunate?” he asked, his lips twitching in amusement.

“Very.” I couldn’t help it. I reached out and squeezed his hand. “Are you okay?”

“Okay that I’ve been celibate for far too long?”

I chuckled. “Well, that and after what happened back at the restaurant. Bethany’s outburst was pretty brutal.”

“I’m okay. I’m just sorry this is going to reflect badly on your dating agency.
